There’s a moment in the clip, right at the start, where our host looks straight into the camera and says something like: I always thought I knew durian… until today.
That’s usually where we’d roll our eyes a little. Every durian video starts with a big claim. But this one was filmed at our own orchard — the 500-acre highland estate in Titikong, Negeri Sembilan that every Musang King, Black Thorn, and Golden Phoenix at Wunder Durian comes from — and honestly, by the end of it, we were nodding along too.

The video opens with a claim that stopped us mid-scroll: what reaches buyers outside Malaysia — including Singapore — is a sliver of what’s actually grown here. Possibly less than 10%.
Most of the harvest never leaves the country. The best of it, in fact, tends to stay exactly where it’s grown, eaten by the people who live closest to the trees. It’s part of why we’ve always leaned so hard on the plantation story — when you buy from Wunder Durian, you’re not buying whatever was left over after the good stuff got picked through. You’re getting the same fruit the farm workers themselves reach for.
Somewhere between the tasting stops, the crew films a roadside stall where workers are sorting through crate after crate of spiky green fruit. The number that gets thrown out: over 200 durian varieties grow across Malaysia’s durian belt. Musang King (Mao Shan Wang), Black Thorn, and Golden Phoenix (Jin Feng) are the three that made it onto our menu because they’re the three we’d stand behind completely — but the sheer diversity growing in these hills is something most people never get to see.
This is the part of the video that actually changed how we talk about our own fruit.
The crew films one of our growers up in a tree, easing a durian — caught on a string so it doesn’t smash on impact — down from a branch. A real Musang King, we’re told, isn’t plucked off the tree while it’s still green and hard. It’s left to ripen naturally until it lets go on its own, and a string is there to catch it before it hits the ground.
That’s the whole philosophy behind our fruit: no shortcuts on ripeness, no picking early to survive a longer shipping window. It’s slower, it’s more labour-intensive, and it’s exactly why the flesh you get in a Wunder Durian box tastes the way it does.
Black Thorn (Hei Ci) goes first, and the reaction is telling: sweet, but with a bitter edge running underneath it, and a finish that lingers far longer than expected. It’s not the crowd-pleaser on first bite — it’s the one that rewards a second one.
Musang King (Mao Shan Wang) is next, and this is the one everyone assumes is “the sweetest,” almost as a matter of national pride. On camera, it’s described as custard-like — dense, almost like ice cream — with an aroma so strong it fills the frame before the fruit even does.
Golden Phoenix (Jin Feng) rounds things out with something lighter and more custardy — proof that “premium durian” isn’t one flavour, it’s a whole spectrum, and the fun is in figuring out which end of it you fall on.
